A new digital format will give professionals access to essential information without the need to take time away from day-to-day work.
Launched by the National Flood School, the interactive video training programme brings together flexible on-demand flood and water damage training modules. The Water Damage Course has been heralded as a ‘significant step forward’ in improving foundational knowledge around flooding.
The curriculum itself was introduced in 2007, but this is the first time it will be available to engage with remotely and in an easy to use format. This means participants can engage at their own pace from wherever they can access the resources.
Content is split between resilience and resistance knowledge – 30% – which supports the Build Back Better initiative, reducing future flooding impact, and restoration best practice – 70% – focused on drying, recovery and property reinstatement. Full details, and information on registering, is here.
The UK has already been hit with widespread flooding this year, starting on New Year’s Day 2025 when vast swathes of England and Wales bore the brunt of torrential rainstorms. 90mm of rain fell within 24 hours, triggering 137 individual flood warnings. Greater Manchester was particularly effected, with 1,000 people evacuated from homes in areas including Didsbury and Stockport. Major train services were cancelled, including those between central Manchester and the city’s international airport, with road routes also blocked.
Last year, the Tokio Marine Group and Economist Impact’s Resilient Cities 2023 index showed that most of the world’s cities are now at risk from flooding and high temperatures. Overall, it is estimated that 1.8billion people – or one-in-four of the global population – live in ‘high flood risk zones‘.
