New training courses launch in Sheffield ‘to grow clean energy workforce’

One of the country’s leading heat pump specialists is now opening its Yorkshire facility to people outside the company.

According to Aira, the new course offering at its Sheffield training facility is in direct response to the UK Government’s Warm Homes Plan. Amongst other things, this stipulates that an additional 400,000 heat pumps and 3 million solar panels should be installed in British households by the end of this decade.

In a bid to support the workforce expansion these targets require, the company has capacity to train 100 installers each month at the Power Academy. Now these opportunities have been opened to electricians, engineers, and plumbers outside the firm’s own direct talent pool.

Candidates that qualify for training can receive up to £850 to cover their costs, with courses themselves starting at £190. Various packages and bundles of modules are also available for those who want to broaden skills and future potential.

‘We’re proud to be extending our training capabilities at the Academy,’ said Sarah Stevens, Aira Academy Manager. ‘Electrification is central to lowering energy bills, decarbonising homes and improving the UK’s energy security. Expanding the Academy allows us to help more installers develop the skills needed to deliver that transition.’

Courses include:

Plumbing

  • Level 3 Award in Installation and Maintenance of Air Source Heat Pump Systems (+ 1 day refresher)
  • Level 3 Award in Low Temperature Heating and Hot Water Systems in Dwellings
  • Hot Water Systems & Safety
  • Water Regulations Advisory Scheme

‘Opening the Academy to external installers, alongside our employees, allows us to support the UK’s decarbonisation goals while helping plumbers, electricians and engineers gain valuable skills in one of the fastest-growing sectors in the energy transition,’ said Aira Academy Trainer, Jack Sutcliffe.
