CircuLab sustainability research innovation hub launches

Based in Bucharest, Romania, the facility will focus on developing the global circular economy.

Reconomy, an international leader in circularity, has confirmed a £1million investment to launch CircuLab.

Amongst other things, the aim is to develop new use cases, propositions, and ways of working for the circular economy. Best practices will be shared, making full use of data analytics and all available technologies – existing and in development.

Eventually, it is hoped that specialist systems and unique facilities will be developed as a result of research at CircuLab, which could revolutionise sectors within the circular economy.

This includes waste management, recycling, repair and reuse. In turn, this will help bring down the quantity of refuse heading to landfill and dumps, conserving resources and closing gaps.

‘We are excited by the launch of this function, the first of its kind in our sector, which will transform our ability to advance the circular economy for our customers and our own business,’ said Guy Wakeley, Chief Executive of Reconomy.

Last November, Environment Journal published data from the Office for National Statistics [ONS] which showed alarming changes in public opinion towards the environment. Just 57% of British adults considered climate change to be ‘an important issue’, down from 69% the previous year.

Business leaders showed a similar decline, with just 28% considering this a priority issue compared with 34% in the summer. At the time, Reconomy’s Group Sustainability Director, Diane Crowe, blamed the cost of living and other external factors. If CircuLab is successful, it could reduce the cost of both services and materials which benefit nature and ecosystems.
