Warrington switches on electric buses in new emissions drive

State-of-the-art Volvo BZL fleet has been delivered to the North West England authority, transforming local transport routes.

Unveiled last week, the new e-bus network will become active this summer, with 105 vehicles ready to begin service, replacing all outdated diesel models operated by Warrington’s Own Buses. This is currently one of the largest electric bus orders in the UK to date.

Volvo’s 2021 tailpipe emission-free design is known for reliability, near-silent drive, comfort and efficiency, running on ultra-quiet propulsion reducing noise for residents close to bus routes, with 85% set to be served by the new fleet.

A deal with EO Charging has also been announced, powering the system with chargers at a newly designed bus depot. All electricity used will come from 100% renewable energy sources. Project is supported by the Department for Transports Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas [ZEBRA] scheme, which aims to introduce up to 4,000 carbon-free buses across the country.

‘We’ve made our ambitions clear, through our Local Transport Plan, to reduce emissions and congestion, increase the share of journeys made by bus and build sustainable transport into everyday life in Warrington. Our new electric buses will play a massive role in us achieving this,’ said Warrington Borough Council Leader and Cabinet Member for highways and transport, Cllr Hans Mundry. ‘At the same time, we’ve been making enhancing our services across the board. This includes reduced fares – such as the newly announced £1 fare cap for all under 22s and free travel for all care leavers – enhanced timetables, all day concessionary pass use and new and improved bus shelters. Supported by these major improvements, our new electric fleet is set to usher in a bright new era for bus travel in Warrington.’
