Logistics operations stretching from Britain to the Middle East will become carbon neutral, setting a benchmark for others to match.
Global freight firm FSEW, headquartered in Cardiff, and Bridgend-based high performance passive fire service specialist Siderise are collaborating on Greenflow. The service will use the former’s electric trucks and maritime fleet to transport the latter’s products to Jebel Ali Port, Dubai, reducing measurable carbon output to zero.
An inaugural journey saw 14 containers transported to Southampton via electric Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 trucks, before being loaded onto ocean freight for onward transit. Under normal circumstances, with diesel trucks and conventional shipping fuel, this would have produced around 20 tonnes of CO2e emissions. Instead, the partnership achieved 100% reduction on this with a combination of battery-plug-in road vehicles and maritime insets certificates.
‘This partnership sets a new benchmark for sustainable supply chains in the UK. Our investment in our electric fleet and maritime insetting has enabled us to offer truly net zero freight journey from start to finish,’ said Geoff Tomlinson, Managing Director at FSEW.
‘Siderise has ambitious GHG reduction targets, and we are excited to work with one of Wales’s leading global businesses to help them achieve this, he continued. ‘We were thrilled to be able to optimise this service to meet their needs without additional costs. I look forward to seeing where our collaborations take us next. We’re proving that carbon-neutral exporting is possible and it’s happening now here in Wales.’
In July, Opportunity Green, Seas At Risk, and Transport & Environment told the UN Ocean Conference that shipping emissions needed to be included in Paris agreement-based climate measurements.
