Planning advice for Local authorities to tackle water crisis

A summer of droughts, hosepipe bans and sewage spills is likely to be followed by an autumn and winter typified by drainage overflow and flood issues.

According to British water technology specialist ACO Technologies, the UK’s ongoing water crisis can only be solved through strategic thinking. This must balance green and grey solutions within a sustainable drainage system [SuDS].

Swales, rain gardens and other nature-based solutions should be fundamental in plans for new development in a message aimed at at local authorities and property companies alike. Meanwhile, new build and retrofitted homes alike should be able to effectively store and harvest surface water through blue roofs, channels, and attenuation tanks.

‘The way we look after water will soon have a clear impact on life in the UK as more areas face water stress,’ said Mike Simpson Lane, Managing Director of ACO Technologies. ‘Expertise on sustainable drainage is niche but vital, so we’re urging all involved in projects that have a drainage component to seek out those with the knowledge, skills and solutions needed to create a drainage system that is right for both the scheme in question and the environment.

“No two projects are identical, so it is crucial that drainage requirements, space limitations, budgets and future changes are carefully considered from the outset,’ he continued. ‘Partnering with experts will lay the foundation for effective and environmentally beneficial drainage and help to mitigate the ongoing water crisis currently afflicting the UK.’
