Data shows electric vehicle sales rising across the UK

New figures released by the government show sales of electric vehicles (EVs) are rising across the UK, with a quarter of a million EV’s now on roads.

Sales in the North of England are seen to have doubled, with EV registration numbers reaching 74,677 in 2021 according to statistics from the Department for Transport.

Data also shows that 327,000 were registered in the last year alone, a 77% rise compared to 2020.

Figures were released ahead of a meeting with the Northern Transport Council to discuss green transport innovation, transport infrastructure and links and economic growth.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said: ‘With a £2.5 billion cash injection, the UK continues to be a global front-runner in the switch to electric vehicles – helping drivers to save money on fuel while moving towards our net zero targets.

‘I’m pleased to meet with colleagues to ensure the north of England has the support it needs for an emission-free transport future, as we clean up our air and support green jobs across the nation.’

The government has outlined plans to boost on-street EV charging in the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Strategy backed by £1.6bn in funding.

It’s hoped the UK will reach 300,000 public charging points by 2030, five times the number of petrol station pumps on roads currently.

However, there are currently only 30,290 EV chargepoints available across the UK according to the latest government data.

Last month only 1,915 new chargepoints were put in place and if the government carried on at this rate a total of only 214,130 public EV chargers will be in place by 2030, well under the set target.

In related news, data sourced from Heycar reveals a significant North-South divide in EV demand, with it estimated to be 70% higher in the South than in the North.
