Great British Bake Off demands Big Climate Plan and fairness checklist

What could possibly go wrong?

It’s the question posed by Friends of the Earth’s latest advertising campaign. Featuring broadcaster and campaigner Chris Packham, Drag Race UK star Crystal, and Great British Bakeoff finalist Dylan Bachelet, the clip hits a nail squarely on the head.

The climate crisis is happening. The economic challenges are now immense. The resource pressure has never been greater. Policymakers and businesses, individuals and households need to be on the same page. And that means coming up with what’s been dubbed a Big Climate Plan.

‘Our planet is getting dangerously hot, dangerously fast. This is causing record temperatures and extreme weather like floods, droughts, and storms here in the UK and around the world,’ Friends of the Earth said in a statement about the video. ‘We need a bold climate plan that ensures cleaner air, lower bills, warm homes, and a fairer, healthier planet for thriving communities now and for future generations. But this can only happen if the UK government acts now.’

A public campaign has now begun to lobby the Government into developing new policy to remove the ‘real risk that the government’s next [climate] plan won’t be strong enough.’ The latest iteration of a document that has plagued successive Downing Street administrations is due this year.

Last month, we reported on how the UK’s net zero sector was now growing at 10% year-on-year, more than three times the wider economy. The Midlands, Yorkshire & the Humber, and South West England were all identified as regions that had benefited from new green industries.
