UK holiday park becomes first fossil fuel-free resort

Groundbreaking on-site energy production, tractors and ovens fulled with vegetable oil, and an all-green external electricity supply have all contributed to the achievement.

Bluestone National Park Resort in Wales is a five-star vacation destination which committed to reaching becoming 100% renewable powered earlier this year. The transition completed in late-September 2025.

Alongside its electricity supply from Ecotricity, which guarantees customers clean energy, primarily from wind, the park produces one-third of its energy needs from an on-site solar installation. This is the largest array of its kind in UK hospitality.

Beyond this, the Bluestone National Park Resort has switched to an all-electric small vehicle fleet, runs tractor on hydrogenated vegetable oil, and uses BioLPG for all cooking. Back-up boilers have also been converted to hydrogenated vegetable oil systems.

‘We purchase a huge amount of energy across the resort and have now completed the final stages of taking all our energy away from fossil fuels into certified renewables. Our Blue Lagoon was amongst the first water parks in the world heated with local renewable biomass,’ said Marten Lewis, Director of Sustainability at Bluestone.

‘It uses waste products from local sawmills and other waste timber products to heat the water, and solar gain thanks to the building’s windows which act like a big greenhouse keeping it warm,’ he continued. ‘In 2025 we’ve transitioned all remaining parts, like back-up boilers for the Blue Lagoon water park, so that Bluestone is now a resort entirely run on purchased fuel that is fossil fuel free.’
