CCC: UK needs greater ambition on clean energy

The Climate Change Committee have this week presented their latest progress in reducing emissions report to Parliament.

The Committee’s latest findings warn that the UK is moving too slowly to protect itself from both climate change and volatile fossil fuel prices. While the UK remains a global leader in cutting emissions and has made encouraging progress in expanding renewable electricity, the pace of electrification is falling short of what’s needed. Heat pump installations have slowed, electric van sales are lagging, and government plans no longer appear sufficient to meet the UK’s 2030 climate commitments.

The report highlights that continued reliance on fossil fuels leaves households vulnerable to geopolitical shocks, with recent price spikes hitting homes using gas boilers and petrol or diesel vehicles far harder than those using heat pumps and electric vehicles. Accelerating the transition to cleaner technologies would not only reduce emissions but also strengthen energy security, improve air quality, and lower consumer costs.

With record-breaking heat, flooding, and rising global temperatures already affecting the UK, the Committee argues that greater ambition is urgently needed. Faster electrification, stronger support for homes and businesses, and more decisive action across sectors will be essential if the UK is to achieve Net Zero by 2050 and build a more resilient future.
