Mayor Khan’s strategy puts health at the heart of transport. Can he get Londoners walking and cycling?
Sadiq Khan’s draft transport strategy is aiming for 80% of everyday journeys to be made by foot, cycle or public transport and for all Londoners to get 20 minutes of walking or cycling a day. But just how realistic are these targets?
Earlier in the year, Transport for London set about finding a way of quantifying how much travel in London could be made by foot or bike. They took data on all of the journeys Londoners made each day, stripped out those already walked or cycled and those that were too long, or involved carrying heavy tools and equipment, and a few other criteria.
Standing up for transport in the south east
The chair of the newly-formed Transport for the South East group says authorities will speak with ‘one voice’ to develop a strategic plan to transform the region’s infrastructure and drive economic growth.
Speaking to Environment Journal, the leader of East Sussex County Council, Cllr Keith Glazier admits in the past the region has missed ‘out on a coordinated approach to transport issues’.
