Wizz Air begins Sustainability Ambassador programme

The low-cost carrier has selected more than 7,000 members of staff across 22 European bases to work at supporting local environmental projects.

Cabin crew and office workers will be involved in the project. Locations in Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Georgia, Hungary, Italy, Malta, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, the UAE and UK will be focused on, reflecting where the airline’s core operations are. 

Efforts will include everything from launching new recycling schemes to helping amplify charity campaign messages, with the project set to run through to May 2024. At that point, Wizz Air’s senior sustainability team will select the initiatives that have had the highest impact. 

‘We are thrilled to be able to provide our colleagues with an opportunity to immerse themselves in sustainability projects that make a difference. The Sustainability Ambassadors will play vital role in promoting awareness and fostering positive change regarding environmental and social sustainability issues across Wizz Air’s network,’ said Yvonne Moyniham, Corporate and ESG Officer at Wizz Air.

‘Our aircraft are already operating with the lowest carbon intensity in the industry, and we believe that by participating in local initiatives at our bases and offices will allow WIZZ team to go even further in reducing our environmental footprint and strengthening sustainability as one of the five WIZZ values, embedded in everything we do,’ she continued. 

Wizz Air was given the title of Most Sustainable Low-Cost Airline at the World Finance Sustainability Awards 2022 and the Global Environmental Sustainability Airline Group of the Year at the CAPA-Centre for Aviation Awards for Excellence 2022. Currently, the firm has a carbon emissions intensity of 53.8grams per passenger, per kilometre, which represents an 11% reduction on 2022 and the lowest rate ever recorded by the company. Nevertheless, the debate over how realistic ‘sustainable aviation’ is continues, with decarbonisation of the sector presenting one of the biggest environmental challenges to date.
