One-third of the World’s lakes are unhealthy, with billions at risk

A major global study has found that more than one-third of the world’s lakes fail to meet good water quality standards – and the problem hits poorer countries hardest.

Using satellite data and artificial intelligence, researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and international partners assessed 16,409 lakes across 145 countries. The results, published in the National Science Review, paint a worrying picture of global freshwater health.

The study found that just 63.3% of lakes worldwide meet “good” water quality standards. That means over 5,000 lakes – more than a third – are in poor condition. But the numbers look very different depending on where you are. In Europe, 73.1% of lakes are healthy. In North America, it’s 80.6%. But in Asia, that figure drops to just 41.7%. South America fares even worse at 27.4%, and in Africa, only 20.3% of lakes meet good standards.

Professor Hongtao Duan, who led the research said: ‘Global lake water quality isn’t just about ‘good’ or ‘poor’, it’s also about a deep geographical inequality.’

Around 2 billion people live near freshwater lakes and more than half of them (57.4%) are exposed to potentially unsafe water. In developing countries, the situation is even more alarming. Nearly 64% of people in poorer nations face health risks from poor lake water quality – about 1.8 times higher than in wealthier countries. That means the same lakes that provide drinking water for millions are also putting them at risk.

Dr. Ming Shen, the first author of the study, said: ‘The ecological and societal importance of lake water quality has been widely recognised. However, a globally consistent and comparable assessment system covering lakes worldwide has remained unavailable, leaving us without a standardised ‘report card’ of global lake water quality.’

Lakes aren’t just pretty landscapes. They’re vital sources of drinking water, food, and livelihoods for billions of people worldwide. Poor water quality can lead to waterborne diseases, harm fish stocks, and damage local economies that depend on tourism or fishing.

Until now, tracking water quality globally has been extremely difficult. Traditional monitoring relies on field sampling and lab tests, which are expensive, time-consuming and simply don’t happen in many parts of the world. More than 60% of UN member states lack comprehensive lake water quality data. The gaps are worst in Africa, Asia, and South America – exactly the regions where water quality appears to be poorest.

The research team developed a new system called GlakeWQ. They fed around 1.39 million satellite images from 2019 to 2022 into machine learning models, which connected the optical signals captured from space with real-world water quality measurements. The result is a consistent, comparable snapshot of lake health across the entire planet.

 

The study reveals a cruel but arguably predictable irony: the countries with the worst water quality problems also have the weakest ability to monitor them. Poorer regions face both greater pollution and less access to information about what’s in their water.

The team hopes their work will help target pollution control efforts and support the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal of ensuring clean water for all. They point out that when water quality can be seen from space, there’s nowhere to hide and no excuse for inaction.
