UK made natural polymer food containers set for more EU customers

JustEat Takeaway.com is rolling out its 100% plant-based plastic alternatives to another ordering platform in time for Christmas, making Austria the third European country to use the chemical free, plant-based packaging.

4,900 restaurant partners from Vienna to Linz have already signed up to use UK firm Xampla’s Morro natural polymer packaging. This follows successful trials in the UK and Germany.

The solution not only looks to cut down on harmful plastic pollution, it slashes the wider footprint associated with this type of waste. For example, the specially designed coating, which replaces traditional materials used to water and grease-proof paperboard containers, contains no PFAS and other forms of chemicals.

‘Thanks to their durability and thermal insulation, these packages are suitable for a wide range of foods and dishes—including greasy meals that are traditionally difficult to transport,’ said Natascha Mauthner, Managing Director at Lieferando, the Austrian ordering platform which is set to use the Morro packaging.

Xampla has already picked up a number of accolades for the technology, including Packaging of the Year at the Responsible Packaging Expo Awards 2025, Innovation of the Year at the UK Packaging Awards 2025, and Gold standard in the Food-on-the-go: Takeaway category at the Environmental Packaging Live Awards 2025.

‘We are excited to work with Lieferando and Huhtamaki—two forward-thinking partners who share our commitment to reducing plastic pollution,’ said Xampla CEO Alexandra French. ‘Our Morro coating is designed to integrate seamlessly into existing packaging processes and offers a high-performance alternative to plastic. Together, we are setting a new standard for environmentally conscious food packaging.’
