Air Quality News confirms 2024 northern conference venue, dates, first speakers

Environment Journal‘s sister magazine has announced details of its annual spring gathering, which welcomes leaders from local government, academia, and the air quality industry.

2024’s Northern Air Quality Conference will take place at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, on Wednesday 19th March. It’s the first time the event has been held at the venue since it began.

The date brings together some of the most prominent scientists, politicians, and engineers working within the fields of air pollution, measurement, mitigation and policy.  The aim is to facilitate knowledge sharing between these professionals through a full day of presentations, discussions and panels, while exhibitors run through the latest technological innovations in this space.

The first speakers have been confirmed for next spring, with names including Roy M Harrison OBE, FRS. Queen Elizabeth II Birmingham Centenary Professor of Environmental Health at the University of Birmingham, his research has looked at locations including Beijing, Delhi and the UK, and he has worked closely at the intersection of science and policy as a past member of Defra’s Science Advisory Council. He also retains current roles on the organisation’s Air Quality Expert Group, and the DHSC Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollutants.

Atmospheric scientist and Research Fellow at the University of Manchester, Tom Bannan, will also be in attendance. Working for the Centre for Atmospheric Science on the development of measurement instruments with a focus on air quality and climate, he has been crucial to the advancement of mass spectrometry, the results of which have been deployed on the British Research Aircraft and in long-term experiments on the ground. Also from the city, Sarah Rowe is the Greater Manchester campaigner for the European network Clean Cities, and brings more than a decade of experience working with local partners in the region to find solutions to toxic air.
