Vueling cuts CO2 emissions by 9.5%, quadruples SAF use

The European budget airline has released its latest climate-related numbers as part of its annual ESG reporting.

According to the audit, Vueling has reduced CO2 emissions per passenger by 9.5% compared with 2019. This achievement partly comes down to quadrupling the mount of sustainable aviation fuel [SAF] the it has used compared with 2022.

The airline, which also claims absolute gender parity in near-180,000-strong workforce, supplied 1,285 tonnes of SAF in 2023, four times the figure from the previous year. The leadership team say they remain committed to increasing awareness of and orders from the sustainable fuel industry, which currently accounts for just 0.5% of global demand.

‘Our mission is to connect people and places and we work to develop solutions that allow us to do so in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way,’ said Sandra Hors, Chief Communication, Sustainability and Public Affairs Officer at Vueling

‘We are proud of the progress we made in 2023, especially in reducing emissions and our commitment to sustainable aviation fuels,’ she continued. ‘We continue to work to achieve our goals both in the short and long term, aiming to have a positive impact on the world for new generations and moving towards a society with greater opportunities.’

The UK is currently attempting to position itself as a sustainable aviation leader, with the Nova Pangaea Technologies, Lanzajet, British Airways, the Government-backed Project Speedbird set to reach full operating capacity by 2028, when it will produce 102million litres of SAF annually. This is the equivalent to 26,000 British Airways domestic flights.
