Plymouth travel infrastructure awarded gold standard

The accreditation recognises a new facility in the city which incorporates multimodal sustainable transport modes.

Plymouth’s shared transport centre on Mayflower Street has been awarded a gold standard by the shared transport charity Collaborative Mobility UK (CoMoUK).

The Connect Plymouth Hub includes a fleet of e-bikes, a EV car club vehicle, and set of electric vehicle rapid charging stations. A bus stop allows for seamless transfer onto public transport, with real-time passenger information.

The facility is just 50 metres from the authority’s national coach station, opening up routes across England and beyond. It is also located next to Plymouth Central Library, public toilets, cafes, shops and amenities.

‘We’re incredibly proud that Plymouth’s Mayflower Street hub has received gold standard accreditation from CoMoUK,’ said Cllr John Stephens, Plymouth City Council cabinet member for strategic transport. ‘This recognition highlights our commitment to making sustainable travel not just possible but practical and appealing for everyone.’

‘Plymouth is setting a great example for other UK cities by embracing mobility hubs, and the Mayflower Street facility is a shining example which will no doubt prove very popular,’ added Richard Dilks, Chief Executive of CoMoUK. ‘Thanks to their flexibility and modest size, mobility hubs are a brilliant way of putting sustainable transport options right in the heart of bustling cities.’

Last year, a study by CoMoUK suggested that expanding car clubs nationally could remove 1.6million vehicles from Britain’s roads, freeing up 20 square kilometres of space. If this form of transport modality were to reach it maximum projected coverage – 29% of commuters – 1.8billion ‘car kilometres’ would be cut.
