Consultation begins on Taunton Transport Hub

Green spaces, active travel provision and links to the wider Garden Town Vision form part of the plans.

A consultation process on the proposed redevelopment of Taunton’s former bus station has begun.

Somerset Council is asking for input from the public and other stakeholders in the area until 17th September. The blueprint for Taunton Transport Hub currently includes:

*Six drive-in, drive-out bus stops with shelters

*Two coach stops at Castle Way

*Five layover bays

*Real-time passenger information

*Indoor waiting room with toilets

*Changing places toilet facility with dedicated accessible parking bay

Improved infrastructure for cycling will also be incorporated, such as dedicated bike parking zones. Upgraded walking links to the River Tone and town centre have been tabled, too, supporting the local authority’s wider Garden Town Vision.

Among other things, the council wants to join up green spaces, waterways, parkland and play areas, increase tree planting and boost resources for managing water sources and wetlands. Rain gardens have been proposed in some locations, which it is hoped could boost tourism and recreation use.

‘We would urge people to get involved with the survey and take a look at the plans – please tell us what sort of facilities you’d like to see. The Transport Hub is a really welcome development for bus users and those wishing to cycle or walk in Taunton,’ said Somerset Council Lead Member for Transport and Digital, Cllr Richard Wilkins. ‘One of our key aims within the Taunton Garden Town Vision is to offer more transport options and by doing so reduce car dependency with increased bus service patronage, helping to create a greener, cleaner town centre.’
