Airport expansion will bring ‘substantial economic benefits’ to capital, mayor says

Sadiq Khan has called on the prime minister to support the opening of a second runway at Gatwick Airport.

The mayor of London wrote to Theresa May yesterday explaining how the expansion of the airport would send the message London is open for business.

He said the extra aviation capacity would help London compete with other major global cities.

‘Gatwick is the most viable option presented by the Airports Commission,’ Mayor Khan said.

‘A second runway at Gatwick will bring substantial economic benefits to London and the UK in terms of jobs, growth and investment, without the significant environmental cost to Londoners of expanding Heathrow.’
