Lancaster has highest number of offshore wind farms

Lancaster has the highest number of offshore wind installations in the country, according to new analysis by comparison site Uswitch.

Following Boris Johnson’s recent pledge that every home in the UK will be powered by electricity from offshore wind farms within a decade, Uswitch analysed which regions are the most prepared.

According to the research, Lancaster has the highest number, with six offshore wind installations.

This is then followed closely by Aberdeenshire and Tendring –  which both have three.

Uswitch also analysed the number of new renewable energy installations across different local authorities in order to see which places have done the most to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels and the grid.

The researchers found that Stoke-on-Trent has the largest number of new installations, these are nearly entirely made up of photovoltaics with an 86% increase from its original total in 2015.

Cornwall came next, having the highest overall number of installations of any region, with a 14% increase over the last half-decade. Stirling was the highest Scottish region and it is also the only other area to break the 2,000 installation barrier, nearly doubling its total from 2,235 to 4,336.

Will Owen, energy expert at Uswitch commented on these findings: ‘The UK is already a world leader in the amount of energy produced by offshore wind, but delivering 40GW of power by 2030 is an ambitious pledge.

‘This summer has shown the challenges that come with managing a higher proportion of renewable power sources in the energy mix, and the National Grid will need a lot of investment to cope with power that ebbs and flows with the wind.’
