Net Zero Tracker launches national and corporate climate target comparison tool

Launched this month, the new Data Explorer is a free online resource revealing the environmental action of countries and corporations, measuring key robustness metrics such as plans, interim targets, and reliance on offsets.

In total, 4,075 individual entities are included in the programme. These range from subnational governments to major global brands, with the top 2,000 businesses in the world, by revenue, all featuring. All countries and territories are also analysed, and regional statistics for the top 25 highest emitting nations, and any city with more than 500,000 inhabitants, are also included.

A goldmine of environmental data for anyone involved in climate work, the expansive resource allows users to drill down into several layers of information for their chosen focus. Clicking on the world map to open up the UK, for example, offers a detailed overview of established climate targets, reveals whether factors such as equity and historic emissions have been taken into account, and allows people to sign up for ongoing updates.

Corporate information includes the sector, what type of interim targets are in place and what those targets are. A traffic light system also rates aspects such as Reporting Mechanism, Scope 3 Coverage and Carbon Credit Use.

Backing up several recent Environment Journal reports into the private sector’s slow progress on environmental action, while reporting mechanisms are now in place for many companies, scope 3 emissions and detailed plans for becoming climate neutral or positive are currently lacking at many firms.

At a national level, there is a similarly mixed picture. 25% of all nations do not have a net zero plan, and 30% have only proposed a roadmap at this time and just 13% have enshrined climate action in law. Meanwhile, almost 80% of cities assessed have failed to draw up net zero plans.
