Schneider Electronic’s annual Sustainability Impact Awards recognised a number of British businesses, brands and organisations as climate leaders.
Tottenham Hotspur have already been voted the greenest Premier League club for the past four years, largely thanks to the team’s new stadium. Running on 100% renewable energy to power all on-site electrical equipment, while the design is recognised as a global benchmark for green buildings, hosting the world’s first net zero football match in 2021.
Also coming out on top at the Sustainability Impact Awards, the Port of Dover was commended for ‘taking an ecosystem-wide approach to decarbonisation’. With 33% of all trade between the EU and Britain entering the country through the facility, the port accounts for 8% of all UK maritime emissions, but has already cut 95% compared with 2007 records.
Smart lighting, electrified heating, Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil fuel for plant, machinery and vehicles, and improved building management systems have all contributed to reducing the overall environmental footprint. Dover now has a plan to become one of the first high volume Green Corridors in Britain. The use of shore power is also being explored, and in the long term it is hoped the transport hub will become a renewable energy provider through onsite energy generation and microgrids.
Platinum Electrical Engineering, an award-winning systems integrator based in Gateshead, also received an accolade for its partnership with London’s Brilliant Planet, a low-cost carbon capture specialist that uses algae to sequester 30 times more carbon than if the same sized area were forested. Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure Automation Expert was used to troubleshoot and adapt processes to ensure all needs were met with a scalable, bespoke system.

The focus of our next edition of these awards remains on decarbonization efforts to electrify, reduce, and replace, and we’re looking forward to learning about those projects in due course.’
