Leeds City Council begins rollout of new charge points, for free

The West Yorkshire authority has seen the first of 71 new installations go live, thanks to a new partnership with Believ.

The charge point operator has funded the project, which will run throughout this year and involves a combination of rapid chargers for long stay and overnight use, and faster systems for on-the-go top-ups at on and off-street locations. These include residential roads, community halls, sports centres and other landmarks sites.

‘Our fully funded model allows local authorities to deliver high-quality, future-ready charging networks without the use of public funds,’ said Guy Bartlett, CEO of Believ. ‘This project reflects our shared ambition to create cleaner air and more sustainable transport options for all.’

‘It’s an important step towards delivering a comprehensive EV charging network that meets the needs of our residents and visitors,’ added Cllr Mohammed Rafique, Leeds City Council. ‘By expanding access to convenient, reliable public charging, especially for those without driveways, we’re helping to make the transition to electric vehicles easier and more accessible for everyone.’

The project represents the latest in a long line of collaborations between Believ and local authorities. Last year, Aberdeen unveiled a new ultra rapid charging hub. Meanwhile, in January Suffolk County Council took early steps in a vast rollout that will see thousands of charge points installed across the region.

Earlier this month, Environment Journal published a run down of the most common obstacles to the installation and expansion of public EV charge points. This included feedback from 101 councils.
